The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Administration (NNSA) has selected Washington Middle School in Cairo, GA, as the initial school to institute the expansion of NNSA’s Laboratories K-12 Outreach Program beyond its current perimeters to reach schools that have a diverse student population and would not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in the laboratories’ outreach programs.

Through this program, the NNSA elucidates and disseminates science content knowledge and educational best practices to the K-12 community.  The program will address: 1) the educational infrastructure; 2) the skills and pedagogy of the teachers; 3) the curriculum used; and 4) the educational instruction and learning experiences of the students.

The six grade classes of Ms. Valerie Coley and Ms. Angela Ponder have been selected to participate in the program.  Dr. Jiang Li of Morgan State University, in Baltimore, provided the first virtual classroom presentation on October 29, 2010.    His topic was, Sinking Cities: Effects of Human Activity on the Earth’s Surface.  Under this program, students will have the opportunity to connect and interact with experts from the DOE Laboratories and Massie Chairs from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities through visitations and computer connections.  The program is also assisted by the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University/Florida State University College of Engineering.
